A Blog Change

I have been struggling recently with the feelings behind my blog. I had experienced this before in 2010 when I deleted my blog suddenly (From Skirts to Skillets) because I felt like it was going in a direction that I didn't want it to. While my heart is in fashion and I love doing outfit photos, I have begun to have mixed feelings behind them.

Many "personal style bloggers" may be able to connect with me when I say that we often come across as "conceited", "arrogant", "self-absorbed", "narcissistic" - I could go on & on. I mean there we are, taking pictures of only ourselves over & over again. I mean I get it. It does seem kind of crazy. Do people really care what one person wears every day? I mean, there must be some people, but that person is just not me - so why am I posting that every day?

Then of course, there is the time factor behind outfit photos. It is incredibly difficult to find the time to constantly document your outfits. Unless of course, you are a full time personal style blogger who documents your daily attire. Folks, my daily attire consists of scrubs and ridiculously Dansko clogs. Any personal stylist would give me a big thumbs down

I originally started this blog because I missed being able to share my outfit inspiration and love for fashion and this was the best way to do it. However, I find myself forcing outfit photographs because I feel "behind" all the time with my blog calendar. This had me thinking about the reason why I started this blog in the first place.

There are many other things I love to do and enjoy that I don't often share on this blog- exercise, interior design, cooking, wedding planning, photography etc. I don't know when my blog has only focused on daily outfit photographs or shopping collages but I have to say this: I AM OVER IT. There is so much more in this world than materialistic happiness. I do not want this blog to focus on purchasing things to make them happy.

I find it very UNinspiring (is that a word? - oh well it is now) to venture onto a blog that doesn't have a voice. The same daily rundown of their outfits every day. Don't get me wrong.....I do love to see a blog that does outfit photos occasionally- just not every.single.day. I do realize that I am this person.

Some of the blogs that I have truly come to love to read on a daily basis are focused on optimism and the joys of life and are extremely inspirational to me. I would love to be able to inspire others, not only with fashion but with everything that I do. I want be able to create a great readership behind my blog and know that they can connect with me. Some of the bloggers that helped inspire this change include: Amanda, Cecilia, Nicholl, Katie, Sarah, Anna, & Ashley (to name a few!)

With all of this being said, I will be showcasing my thoughts much more often and creating posts that are more "well- rounded". What would you like to see more of on the blog?

  1. I so loved and appreciated reading this post. While I am not a fashion blogger, I can totally understand where you are coming from-- can only imagine having to constantly "get dressed up" for posts etc etc. I love your move towards a deeper, more introspective place, because I do think that strictly materialistic posts can get old. Like... we get it, you can kill it with your outfit EVERY SINGLE DAY... but what else do you have to offer?
Basically, I think you should always just be real, and put forth what feels best for you, and if what you have been doing no longer seems to fit, then I fully support you making a shift.
Sorry to write a novel, but your post was so wonderfully personal and revealing that I couldn't not. Honestly, just that picture of you in your scrubs and clogs was so refreshing that I wanted more of THAT. K bye hah

  2. I think this was a wonderful post! I am glad that you are thinking of expanding into different areas that you enjoy! You have a wonderful voice and I am excited to read more of it! =)

  4. This is a great post, it is nice to hear your true feelings. I can totally relate, I currently working in the ER (over in the UK its A&E but same difference). I go from scrubs to PJs all the time. I am so excited to see what is coming to blog next.

  5. First of all, sorry for my bad English but as is not my native language is much more difficult to express myself clearly :)
Well, I follow your blog from about 6 months or so and I love it specially because you share your thoughts and not only your way of dressing. I think is a very good idea to continue blogging about things you love but that this doesn't mean that you are forced to do it, it's all about have fun and love what you do :) Claudia

  6. As a new blogger I have been posting about anything and everything that interests me, to find my voice and my niche. I think it is so hard to only post about one thing especially if may things interest you. I know for me starting my blog was a way to have fun and creative outlet, as I'm sure it is the same for you. I think it is great that you want to post about more than just your outfits, although I do love them :) I look forward to your "new blog". -Heidi http://fabricandfrosting.blogspot.no/

  7. What a beautiful post! Proud of you for following your heart! And even though I'm only discovering you for the first time today, I know it must be a difficult decision to change the course of your blog. I agree wholeheartedly...I love reading inspirational blogs! Although they are always telling us to "find our niche and stay there" in order to be successful, I am a multifaceted person, and as such, enjoy reading multifaceted blogs - and I write one myself that (hopefully) has a variety of inspiration for everybody! I'm sure many like-minded people will enjoy the changes to come around here. I look forward to following them! Have a wonderful day...

  8. I definitely hear you and I struggle with this a lot too. Why am I doing this? Am I being shallow? And taking the pictures themselves is always a bit of challenge because I mostly rely on other's to help me out.

But it is your space, so if you want to post less often, or about different, or not even about fashion, nobody is going to get upset. Presumably people come to the post for inspiration - of all sorts. Just yesterday I posted about a recent about our relationship with a local hospital, and then another post about Sherman Hemsley passing away. Neither one of those things have to do with style or fashion, but I feel I'm "allowed" to move away from a fixed format because it's my space.

Good luck with these concerns, I hope you continue to blog. :)

  9. Great post! I'd love to see you post more about your fitness and eating routines! I find those posts to be the most exciting when I'm venturing to a new blog. I can't wait to see your posts and your blog transform!

  10. Great post. I think all of your interests would create a very well-rounded blog that I'd certainly be excited to read. I would love to see more posts on cooking (since you have a busy and challenging job, figuring out what to cook with a short time frame and not a lot of energy is a challenge that many of us face). I also love interior design inspiration. Best of luck switching it up. I think it'll be a great success.

  11. I totally hear you on this. But at the same time, there's nothing wrong with sharing your outfits in the form of pictures... sometimes, fashion is your voice! It's not conceited; you're sharing your creativity with the rest of us. Do what feels right for you - can't wait to see what kinds of posts you create moving forward!

  13. Love this post and truly respect you for putting it all out there. I try to keep myself from being the typical post your outfit type of blogger by doing food posts and posts where I share my photography. It's a great way to pull yourself out of a rut and get re inspired but different things. I say do what makes you happy. In the end you need to be blogging for yourself.

  14. I loved reading this post - it was beautiful and honest. Don't give up your blog, you can still inspire in your own way! Anna does it through fashion and modesty and family. I love Nicholl's, sara's, and Amanda's blogs too! Think of what makes you come alive - and talk about that, you can mix it up! Beautiful blog :)

  15. Thank you for this post!! It's good to hear there are other bloggers out there that feel exactly as I do. When I started my blog the intention was not to document every outfit I wear, but to inspire people with creative projects, fun recipes, and unique things that I do. You really just helped put things in perspective for me as far as my own blog. As for your blog - I would love to see your photographs, creative projects, and hear a little about wedding planning (since I'm planning my own for next fall!)

Keep up the great work and thanks for being so honest with all your readers

  16. I love seeing your outfits, but the reason I love blogs is because I like following people who I can relate to. I feel like we could be real life friends, and real life friends care about more than each other's (others'?) outfits! Excited to see what you have in store for this season in your life!!!!

  17. I am sure that every one of your readers appreciate your honesty Lynzy! As a blogger who takes style photos, I TOTALLY empathize with both the time factor (takes SO much time!) and the feeling of "does it really matter what I wear? I mean, who cares?" I love your blog because I feel that you balance quite a few topics...but I can't wait to see what lies ahead as you mold it into something more authentic for you!

  18. I think it's awesome that you're following your heart and making a change. I've always said if I can't put my heart behind what I'm writing or posting, I won't do it. It's important for you to enjoy what you're posting on your blog. If it's evident that you're passionate about it, then your readers will love you all the same. Kudos to you and best of luck with the transition! I'm sure it will be fantastic!

  19. Hi Lynzy,
I feel like this quite a lot actually. I'm also in a field where I spend most of my day in scrubs and lab coats so finding the time to take photos is hard. Then some days I'll just be sitting and thinking this is too materialistic and not me at all. The first time this happened, I did a post about being happy and motivated. And that made me so happy!
so now I blog about a mix of things that are me, fashion of course is a love of mine, then I do motivational posts about exercising, about loving yourself and other things that make me happy :)
so yes I would love to see posts like that from you!!
    xx

  20. I'm with you in most of this, especially in the "does someone actually care?" part. But bottom line is I care, blogging makes me happy even though I'm lousy at it sometimes due to the fact that I don't find the time to do it. Its great that you will blog about stuff that reflects who you are and that at the end of the day makes you happy. That's what's life is about :) Good Luck!

  22. Thank you for sharing this! Just so you know, you are one of those bloggers who definitely DOES NOT come off as arrogant, conceited, or narcissistic. You share your fun, unique style and aren't just all "Look at the expensive purse I bought" or "OMG I HAVE TO HAVE THESE SHOES." (There are plenty of those out there)

That being said, I totally get why you'd want to branch out from fashion! I'd love to hear about you interior decorating ideas (especially since you're in your new place), wedding planning, newlywed life, or fitness. Can't wait to see what you do!

  23. I love this idea! I started my blog as a "fashion" blog and it just didn't seem to fit me, I still do outfit posts every once in awhile but it is no longer my focus. All fashion blogs seem the same to me now- and to be honest I stopped paying attention to your blog as well as many others that I use to follow in the beginning because they got boring to me. I started following blogs that were more about life instead. I am excited to start following your blog again!

  24. Congratulations on following your gut! It's always refreshing to read about bloggers being true to themselves. I'm sure we've all found ourselves being turned off blogs that get too stale. Hooray for your new adventure.

  25. Congratulations on your new direction. I have a blog as well but rarely post as I didn't think folks would really care all that much about what a 57 year old, slightly overweight lady was wearing. I have often wondered too how some of these young ladies can afford some of the stuff they are wearing unless the designer or company gifted it to them for mentioning them! I think in our crazy world today folks are looking for inspiration from others in just getting thru each day in a humane and caring way. Being healthy is another concern I feel folks are becoming aware of. Not that the occasional post of an outfit especially if it was a crazy bargain from a consignment store, thrift store or sale wouldn't be appreciated. I look forward to your new posts, it will be an exciting new journey for both yourself and your followers!

  26. I absolutely admire your honesty and thanks for sharing. You are completely correct, as a personal style blogger you can get run down and feel pressured to post. I recently went through a similar expereince where I felt like I was over committing myself. So I restructured my blog calander and am not posting less outfit post a week, just so that I don't run myself down. I fill the other days with things I want, thing's I've cooked or silly little musings. If I feel inspired to post an extra outfit post that week then I do it. I had to realize that it's my blog and I have to adjust it to my, not anyone else.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll figure things out:)

  28. i admire your honesty and agree it is hard to get an outfit everyday. i have my own blog and i am not a perfect size in the modern world. i just had a baby! and to top it i had a c-section so the perfect clothing is not an option for me. but this is a way to build my self confidence, plus i live for makeup and fashion. i look at myself in my blog and just hate my pictures because i am not photogenic...but this is a way for me to look at myself outside a mirror and accept who i am...that is why my blog is called Metamorphosis of the Imperfect Woman. it is about learning to deal with my flaws and accept who i am and learn to look in the mirror and say, "you are beautiful". sure now i do not see it, but i hope with posting my outfits i can see myself as beautiful someday. you do what you want to do for you and whatmakes you happy. i love your blog and will follow it no matter what you post!

  29. I love this post Lynzy! I can't even begin to tell you how much I agree with you! While I love fashion I simply can't keep up at times. I love to share the things I love on my blog and now that I'm expecting, I 'm sure that my blog will take a new direction (and I'm totally excited about that). There have been so many times where I just wanted to delete my blog b/c I was feeling down and/or comparing myself to others. But, I keep going on b/c at the end of the day, my blog and the readers bring me so much joy and it's been such a creative outlet for me. I love that you're taking your blog in a new direction and I love that you're pursuing photography. I can't wait to see your future posts! www.casualglamorous.com

  30. Love this, and it's so true. I only post my outfits once a day because I consider myself more of a lifestyle blogger and still feel like this from time to time. I mean who am i that everyone wants to see my outfits?! And, why am I nagging my husband to take outfits of me in ridiculous poses? You get the idea. I love the idea of you rounding out your blog with things that organically interest you. At the end of the day, if we're not happy with our blogs, the content, the direction it's up to us to change it. some readers might fade but others will find you and feel thrilled that they did.

    Thanks for piping up! :)

  31. Lynzy - this post is awesome. i definitely relate to it especially since when i started my blog i didn't plan on doing outfit posts and they have started to become more regular posts. I sometimes/all the time wonder about how it's perceived as vapid. and i've definitely felt the pressure to keep up with my outfits and posting... but for what? more page views or sponsors?
i've been struggling with this lately and have decided that as long as i enjoy what i'm posting about than i shouldn't worry about all that stuff. i'm looking forward to seeing what you decide to post (i especially love the fitness stuff) and don't let it get you down! just do what you love and people will follow ... like dr. seuss said. 32. L - Such a perfect post, I have been thinking/struggling with this too. My daily life is much to busy to snap outfit photos every.single.day. And when I do, I feel like it's all I "can" or "should" post. I've created a calendar that designated certain days for outfits, certain for food/recipes, and certain for "other" things that I can hopefully stick to - because it's more of who I am.
This blog is YOURS and it should be YOU and reflect YOU. The minute it isn't is the minute you know it's not right or not you. Your true followers will know that and stick with you, through every change or developing into the blogger that you are!

  34. We exchanged a few tweets earlier, but I just wanted to say one more time... THANK YOU for this post :) I too have been feeling "behind" on my blog and its turned into a job, which was not what I wanted it to feel like. I am a new(ish) blog so I struggled to always "keep up" with the big names and I am just overwhelmed with it. I want to write about my life, do vlogs about whatever, and share my ideas/thoughts/inspiration on fashion, not just show people what I wear here and there... and often, I force an outfit because it has to be "blogworthy"

I am so happy that you wrote this post and I am looking forward to meeting you all over again!

  38. There is nothing wrong with wanting something deeper...

As a reader only, I do not think that fashion bloggers are what you say they are...Personally I am grateful that I have discovered fashion blogs such as yours... It is because you (and many others of many different cultureds and shapes)can be bothered to photograph yourselves that has helped me wash away all the insecurites I have had with my body... For the first time in my 31 years on this earth I am looking at real beauties,in real (achievable)clothing/outfits and it's made me realise that actually I can wear those nice clothes too!!That I actually look good too! (That is huge for me. I was someone who couldn't even look in the mirror...It was too painful and I couldn't handle what I was looking back at me)

Ofcourse you feel the need to include something more meaningful to you, and you should... It makes it all the more real world to me instead of the images that are constantly thrown our way the moment we become teenagers (or even younger!) with super skinny models living out of this world in weird poses(lol)!

Keep on and remember to rest and look after yourself.

  39. Lynzy, Very honored to be included in the above list. And super proud of you!!
I really struggled for a long time when I first started blogging because #1 -there was a huge learning curve for me... and #2. what did i want it to be about?! I finally took the leap to write from a more personal place and I think that's when I began really enjoying it.

Can't wait to read and see the change here! Again, really proud of you!

  40. Thanks for sharing this. I also have an "eclectic" blog and write about so many different elements of my life...the joy of being a new wife, crafty DIY projects, design and decor, food...you name it. I think it's ok, and even great to expand the horizons of a blog. A blog should reflect the person typing the posts out each day.

I'll be visiting more, thanks for writing :)

  42. I know exactly what you mean... I recently started a blog with my sister (very very recently) and we have struggled trying to figure out the direction we want it to take. Do we want it to be a purely fashion blog since we adore fashion... or do we want it to encompass more of our lives, the everyday things that make us who we are. I've followed your blog without commenting for quite awhile now but I just wanted to chime in and say that I would love to see more of the other aspects of your life. You have built up a great following and I feel that no matter which direction you decide to take this blog, you will have loyal and avid readers simply because of who you are.

  46. Hi.

I really like this post. It made me think twice before putting up another post. I agree that sometimes people perceive fashion bloggers as narcissistic arrogant people. Fashion bloggers will only make you drool about their latest outfits/events. At some point of my blogging, I have thought of this. But I wasn't really able to absorb the "reality". When I started sometimes I feel down when Im not able to go to those "social" events. but then, reality slapped me. It isnt my life. It isnt me. I love fashion and I love to wear clothes and I ride public transportations everyday. I cant obviously wear a tower 5-inch heels like those "fashion bloggers".

  47. I liked this post but at the same time I felt sorry for all the bloggers. Everyone starts doing this as a hobby and then they get caught up in this whirl of stats, comments, hypes, likes, ads etc that they forget why they even started writing the blog - out of pure wish to showcase their style and get inspired. And that's the real deal. People should forget stats and incomes from blogs and start writing and posting about things that they really enjoy, respect and stand behind, whether it's fashion, photography, inspirational thoughts or something else. Then no one would have these kind of self doubts and blogosphere would be much more diverse and really inspiring place.

  48. I love this post, thank you for saying this! I've started feeling similarly about posting daily outfit photos too - they're so time-consuming (I am ALWAYS "behind"), and it really isn't the only thing I love. I started my blog as a "lifestyle" blog, but have really only been doing outfit photos lately, which I never wanted in the first place either. Great post, you've definitely inspired me to rethink my daily posts too, and I would love to see more of anything on your blog about whatever inspires you or what's going on in your life :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well, I really appreciate your blog and the effort to share your daily outfits. I guess for me, it is okay to share your outfits and your love for fashion because you said it yourself, most of the time you're wearing scrub suits. I guess this is a way to vent out and share your personal style. There's nothing wrong with that. But I also do agree with you when it comes to feeling self-absorbed and all that. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't stop what you love. I think you're right for sharing more to your blog. Personally, I do share my own thoughts and other things that I love because it reflects my personality and just 'Me.' Share something you love just because you want to share them not because you're pressured to be well-rounded :)

More power to your blog and would love to see more of you and read more.

Do not delete this like you did on the last one okay? Haha!
