This past weekend, my fiance and I decided to go home to our "other" house for a few nights. Here, this is peace and quiet all hours of the day. You can hear the birds chirping and the summer bugs deep into the night. I woke up Saturday morning and walked downstairs, had a cup of Jo and read a few magazines. There is no television here, nor is there internet or great cell phone service.
Until today, I never imagined myself living without these things. I am constantly on my phone (to a fault) and I love watching television. Not to mention, what would a blogger do without internet?!
Well, let me tell you what you would do. You would enjoy life just a bit more.
You would browse Pinterest less and enjoy your significant other more.
You would go on your social media channels less and love your pets more.
You would get out of the house and enjoy company at a nearby coffee shop instead of marching around your house in pajamas all day.
You would surf internet shops less and save more mula.
You would watch less television and talk more with your s.o.
You would enjoy the sound of music instead of your email/text message beeps.
I could go on & on with this. The point is: you don't need it. You don't need the internet 24/7 and you don't need television.
This got me thinking about our future children and keeping ourselves unplugged. I am highly considering going without a television and encouraging our children to dream and create. When I was a wee- little one I used to craft anything and write books. Children these days are wrapped up in television on their momma's iPad or using controllers to play video games.
What do you think? Are you unplugged? Would you ever do it?

I love this post! I have found myself so invested in the computer (and my iPhone/iPad) that I rarely can just focus on the present and the beauty of just being and doing--alone or with friends, s/o, etc. I do not watch a lot of television--and I am to an extent going "unplugged" there because I have been debating on getting one in the bedroom, but I think it is just best to NOT. I don't need it, like you said. I do need to get better with the phone/computer. The majority of the time I spend is just mindless. I hope to set time limits on myself to get what I need done, but avoid all the "fluff." Great post, great concept, good luck with your "unplugged" endeavors! :)
ReplyDeleteSounds lovely! Personally I just love the quiet of places like that -make me sleep so well. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard putting down my iPhone. Such an addict. And I agree. Lately, I've been so preoccupied with the internet and blogging I rarely have a chance to appreciate the greater things in life. Thank you for reminding me of where I should be keeping my priorities!

Totally agree with this and that's why I'm so excited about our trip to Maine this weekend! I definitely need a little break from the blog and social media and I have several friends with kids who don't even own a tv and they entertain themselves just fine! We do have one, but I'm really strict about limited their "screen time" so they can enjoy being outside, playing creatively & just being kids!

This is a great post Lynzy, and thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI just got back from a short business trip at a conference, where I also tacked on a couple of days of vacationing - and while the internet and television was always within reach, I chose to minimize my time on them, and it feels so good. I do spend A LOT of time on the internet, that's the nature of my work, but then I get home and the first thing I do is reach for the laptop, and then there's the iPhone. It's difficult to unplug but it is essential. I know my husband would appreciate it a lot if I weren't ALWAYS online.
But how do we get away from our online dependence when our popular culture keeps pushing us to downloads more apps, and watch shows online, and check out the latest blog or social media site?

I love this post! I grew up without a television and I think it's one of the best decisions my parents made. My husband and I currently do not have a TV and we definitely want to raise our kids without it or at least with very minimal exposure to it. We've already decided never ever to put a TV in our living room!

What a great weekend :) As hooked as I am to my phone and internet, I truly do love the chance to unplug and just enjoy life. I think that's one of my favorite things about airplane rides, a chance for a forced pause from technology and an excuse to just read a book. And I'm sure someday I'll do this kind of thing with kids as well. Thanks for sharing and glad you had such a great weekend! xo
ReplyDeleteGosh this sounds so perfectly serene and what my life used to be. Just last night I was appalled at myself for watching tv, whilst actively surfing the internet and going on my social media channels AND playing bejeweled on my brand new iPAD (which my s.o got for me- bad move). As a new blogger, I doubt i'll find the time to unplug, I'm definitely going to need to invest in an "other" home in the future. My ex boss took me to her farm house in Louisa, VA, it was so enchanting and so freeing. Ahh one day!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to have those weekends where you can go of the map and turn off every devise you have. Such a wonderful feeling. I think every one should do this more often. -Heidi http://fabricandfrosting.blogspot.no/
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! I was totally unplugged on vacation, and I loved it!
ReplyDeleteThere is a really beautiful article in the latest Kinfolk (Vol 4) that speaks to this idea. It has inspired me to walk away from the computer more and spend my time doing the things I "never have the time for" like reading and discovering new music. I think it's important we always remind ourselves there is more to life than the Internet! Glad you had the chance to get away!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I'm so bad about being on my phone or the internet or some kind of social media all the time! It's tough when you're a blogger because social media is such a huge part of it. But when the opportunity arises to get away for awhile and unplug, it's always so refreshing and really gets the creative juices flowing. It's so important to not miss out on the relationships with the loved ones around you so this is a great reminder. Thanks for the great post!
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely idea! it's so hard to get away from it all. i would do this
